Interboro Beer Tasting - Brooklyn's Hottest New Brewery

It was almost 6:30pm on a cold Thursday evening when I paid a visit new kid on the block Interboro Spirits & Ales located on 942 Grand St., Brooklyn, NY 11211. Currently Brooklyn’s only craft brewery and distillery, they offer nine beers on tap plus a gin and tonic tap featuring their proprietary gin, Goodwin Hill. Greeted by the rest of the team who got there before me, I stopped to exchange pleasantries before making a swift and decisive move to the bar. I was thrilled to learn that 4 packs of Madd Fat! Fluid, a stellar offering that was just recently canned was still available. I promptly made that purchase and lined up a flight of sheer goodness to kick off the proceedings. Moments later the new Tribe Called Quest album started to play and the BTBT crew were rocking out with great brews and good tunes. At this point it was clear that a quick stop in to chat with Interboro head brewer Jessie would translate into several hours of throwing back delicious craft brews. And can you really fault us? Interboro is making a lot of noise on the scene and if you’ve ever tried any of their offerings you’d know exactly why.

Interboro touts its goal as being ‘to engage, inspire, and bring people together with their distinctive, flavor-forward beers and spirits’. That sentiment is at the core of what this wonderful libation is all about, it is its most charming and inviting attribute. At its minimum beer can bring people together but good beer, which is truly a feat to be appreciated, possesses the power to bring people together over and over again. Interboro specializes in everything from session beers to barrel-strength whiskeys and strive to show us ‘what can be done with three basic ingredients: grain, yeast and water.’ I have to say these guys really kill it, they make quality brews and they are hospitable too. The Interboro team gave us a tour of their brewery and showed us where the magic happens. We kicked it with their team, had a few brews and we even got to see their brewery cat, Bingo, who was originally adopted from a shelter in North Fork, Long Island; Bingo presumably a converted hipster now calls Brooklyn his home.
20161208_204600Once Nas finally came on the music rotation it was a wrap, we knew we’d be back and back often….Now for that moment we’ve all been waiting for, I’ll give you the rundown on the beers that were consumed and what we thought!

Mad Fat Fluid ABV 7.0%
This delicious IPA is a juicy flavor filled fruit bomb that is on par with the best in its class that New York offers. There’s a beautiful melon-like hue on the pour. Notes of Citrus, grapefruit, pineapple and melon on the nose and tongue and they all blend smoothly. Madd Fat Fluid is brewed with English Optic malt and lots of malted oats and wheat. It is Fermented with American ale yeast and hopped with Mosaic, Centennial & Equinox. Borrowing its name from a line in the song ‘Halftime’ by Nas off of the timeless classic Illmatic, this one delivers on so many levels. It’s a truly high quality IPA that should be consumed immediately. I went back for seconds on this one!

Interboro Dos Ojos ABV 6.2%
Interboro’s take on a Vienna style lager is brewed with Vienna & Pilsner malt and corn. Cold fermented with Mexican lager yeast, hopped with noble varieties. Classic amber coloring on the pour; Grassy hops and malt on the nose. It finishes with a refreshing and slightly bitter kick. Fun fact Dos Ojos is Spanish for "Two Eyes" and also happens to be the name of a flooded cave system located north of Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The Next Episode ABV 8.0% IBU 40
A very nicely balanced Double IPA brewed with Golden Promise, Wheat and Vienna malts, American Ale yeast and hopped with Hop heavyweights Cascade, Citra and Galaxy. Juicy citrus and pine notes mixed with caramel, toasted grains and malt on the nose. Similar flavors on the tongue and this one finishes with a subtle bitter sweetness. Bump some Snoop D-o-double-g and Dr. Dre while you sip on this delectable delight.

Bass In Your Face ABV 7.9% IBU 40
Interboro bills this big and bold brew as a ‘hi-fidelity surround-sound DIPA’. This one is brewed with English Golden Promise base malt and loads of malted wheat and oats that create that deep full body feel. Notes of Tropical fruit, melon rind, mango and pineapple on the nose and tongue and finishes with a medium bitterness. Sensing a naming theme? Throw on some Public Enemy and sip on some of this delightful brew.

Bushburg ABV 5.5% IBU 20
The name represents a mashup of what the neighborhood was and what it now is, an ode to the past and an acknowledgment of change, Bushwick meets East Williamsburg with the bushburg pilsner. It pours a bit of hazy yellow with noble hops on the nose. Light and tasty with just a hint of dryness on the finish.

Approved Stout ABV 5.5% 42.0 IBU
You may know by now that I am a stout aficionado and I was excited to try this. Approved is brewed with English pale and brown malts, with roasted and flaked barley for color and body. Simply put this is a beautifully balanced stout with notes of chocolate, roast coffee and surprisingly powerful malt depth given the ABV. Final verdict, the stout is Approved!

We did not have any of their gin but there’s always next time and rest assured BTBT will be back again and again. In fact we will be featuring Interboro on our podcast on January 7th.

    1. BTBT’s humble opinion is that Interboro is one of the best breweries in NYC. If you are in BK they need to be on your brewery hit list. Cheers!
