Beer Versus Workout

It’s a busy week with a new blog post and new podcast episode being delivered to you strictly for your joy and pleasure. This week’s blog installment continues on from Beer and Your Health: The Real Story. Today’s focus will be how beer impacts your workout routine. If you’re reading this then you probably love beer, if not love at the very least have a deep appreciation for the art of the craft. If it’s neither and you randomly stumbled onto the page then hey how’s it going? We invite you to join us on our craft beer odyssey.

If you’re a drinker then your waist line might be a concern. It certainly is for me! If you’re like me you probably need to do a better job of balancing drinking and exercising. Often times the former supersedes the latter. After a lengthy absence from the work out scene I said to myself, god damn it cut the shit and start a new workout routine.  My wife who works out fairly regularly wanted in on a program that we could do together so we decided to go for Core De Force. Our schedules are too hectic for the gym so at home work outs are the perfect solution for us. Having done a few Beach Body work outs in the past I was confident that I’d be jumping into a solid program. 1 week in and so far so good, the 7 day a week (6 days active work outs and 1 day recovery routine) program is all about shredding fat and strengthening your core.

The workouts are fast paced and engaging and I've paired them with a relatively healthy diet. I also take an all-natural nutritional supplement Greens™ Blend Berry flavor and a It Works! Shake™ - Rich Chocolate protein shake. My wife also takes ThermoFit which is a metabolic booster. The supplements provide me with much needed energy boosts and help aid in muscle recovery.

So the question is how does beer impact my work out?

Of course before determining the appropriate rate of any type of alcohol consumption or the required level of exercise for you, consult a doc. Most of the time they know what they’re talking about and they genuinely want to keep you healthy!

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, in the U.S., one drink is usually considered to be 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1½ ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as gin or whiskey). Each delivers about 12 to 14 grams of alcohol. Moderate drinking sits at the point at which the health benefits of alcohol clearly outweigh the risks. The latest consensus places this point at no more than one to two drinks per day for men, and no more than one drink per day for women. This is the definition used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and is widely used in the United States.

The Mayo Clinic advises that healthy adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise during the course of a week. They also advise that when it comes to strength training you should hit all major muscle groups at least two times a week. Aim to do a single set of each exercise, using a weight or resistance level heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions.

According to Drinkaware.co.uk drinking too much can lead to dehydration because the alcohol makes your kidney produce more urine. Exercising soon after drinking alcohol can make this dehydration worse because you sweat as your body temperature rises. Combined, sweating and the diuretic effect of exercise make dehydration much more likely.

Alcohol also interferes with the way your body makes energy. When you’re metabolising, or breaking down alcohol, the liver can’t produce as much glucose, which means you have low levels of blood sugar. Exercise requires high levels of sugar to give you energy. If your liver isn’t producing enough glucose, your performance will be adversely affected. Drinking alcohol also reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy.

So the key for a drinker to maintain good health is to exercise regularly, maintain a nutritionally balanced diet and make sure you drink high quality craft brews in moderation, if possible.

If Core De Force is a bit too high paced for you another great way to get healthy is Yoga. According to Osteopathic.org yoga is ideal for:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality
  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism
  • Weight reduction
  • Cardio and circulatory health
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Protection from injury

  1. You literally read my mind – been brainstorming about a post related to drinking habits and fitness! I have also been looking everywhere for a Yoga Beer Drinking class in NYC! The closest I had found was The Bronx Brewery’s Beer Yoga – but they do not incorporate actual drinking during the yoga poses. Hopefully they have some more scheduled classes soon 🙂

    1. With craft beer being as good as it is we definitely need to include some form of fitness routine in our lives! There’s a new group – Beer Fit Yoga that just started doing events at Finback and Wartega, they’re a bit closer to home and I believe they do incorporate drinking into their poses. Cheers.
