The BTBT entrepreneur series is back and this week we feature Joey Garofalo organizer of The Brew Hop 5k a 21 and over annual 5K (3.1 miles) event returning to Randall’s Island on Saturday, October 21st, 2017.

The New Jersey native currently inhabiting NYC handles all aspects of The Brew Hop 5k including marketing, sponsorship, production, F&B, and day of operations.

How did you first get involved with the Brew Hop 5k?
Something about running and beer just always seemed to fit well together for me so starting an event bringing people together who love both was the obvious next step!

What’s the most challenging aspect of organizing this event?
Making sure every attendee enjoys themselves and hopefully comes back next year with more friends.

What is the most rewarding aspect of organizing this event?
Just being able to host an event like this in a city like NYC for so many people is incredibly special to me.

Tell us more about Oceanic Global and why you decided to collaborate with them?
Oceanic Global is doing amazing work in educating people about the dangers of plastics in the oceans. They collaborate with artists, musicians, and events to create unique experiences to spread that message. I chose them because I'm also passionate about ocean conservation and I think it hits home with a lot of New Yorkers as well considering we are completely surrounded by water. At The Brew Hop 5k, you won't find any single-use plastics at the water stations or for the beer.

What is the ultimate goal of The Brew Hop?
The Brew Hop is here to promote active lifestyles, amazing local beers, and having fun.

How many entrants to the race do you expect to have?
We're expecting anywhere from 1500-2000.

What are some of the prizes available for the winners?
We're working on some great gifts from Brooklyn Running Co. as well as Brew Hop merchandise. Every runner will receive a finisher gift as they cross the finish line with the top 3 men and women receiving special merchandise packages to take home.

Do you like to stay fit and active?
Of course. I try to run or hit the gym at least 4 times a week.

Do you do any home brewing?
I took a brewing course in college and learned I should stick to the events side of things. I'll leave the brewing to the pros!

What are some of the beers and breweries that you would recommend to the BTBT Goons?
There's something to love from each of our featured breweries this year but lately I've been loving KCBC and Interboro. Both fairly new in NYC and putting out great beers. Also Citizen Cider (our only non-NY feature this year) is making some of the best cider in the game right now. All natural straight from the craft beer mecca of Vermont.

How many tickets are left?
It changes everyday. Tix are going fast!

What else should everyone know about the Brew Hop 5k?
We purchase all of the beer from the breweries rather than ask for donations so we can support NYC's amazing craft beer community. Come out to the event and do the same!

The 5K Brew Hop goes down Saturday October 21st at Randall’s Island. As soon as runners cross the finish line they will be greeted with unlimited tastings from 15+ local craft breweries. There will also be live music, lawn games, picnic area, photo booth, and food vendors in attendance.

The event is sponsored by Yelp, Guayaki Yerba Mate, Green Mountain Energy, Brooklyn Running Co. and Protes Protein Snacks.

Joe has a BA in History from The University of Vermont and has worn many hats in his career including event producer, talent buyer, marketing director and sponsorship coordinator.
